MTN Animal Identification and Management Solution (MTN AIMS)

At MTN Business, we’re keenly committed to employing technology in transformational ways. We work collaboratively with government at different levels in tackling societal challenges. A major thrust in this regard is the recent launch of the MTN Animal Identification and Management Solution (MTN AIMS).

Imagine for a brief moment that extraordinary feeling of joy and utter relief you’ll experience when your highly cherished livestock, animals or pets go missing and you find them again, with ease.

That’s what MTN AIMS is all about. The solution makes it possible, with the use of handheld RFID scanners and a short code, for law enforcement agents, veterinary inspectors, cattle market operators, transporters, abattoirs and animal owners to determine animal ownership and, by so doing, help curb the worrying national issue of rustling.

But that’s only a part of the story. With effective identification in place, Nigeria thus takes an important step towards preparing its livestock for the international export market. Read on to learn more about how MTN AIMS works and how it can make a difference.

How the Product Works

You visit your local veterinary to get your animals chipped (injected) with an MTN AIMS RFID chip. The RFID chip is a passive device that contains a unique identification code. The animal’s unique identification code is appended to the animal owners profile on the MTN Identification and Management portal.

RFID scanners can be used by law enforcement agents, Abattoirs etc, to read this unique identification code. The code is then sent via SMS to 58123. The sender will then receive an SMS with details of the owner of the animal.

Benefits

  • Livestock, pet and animal owners can be reached if their lost or stolen animals are found
  • Law enforcement agents can determine animal ownership and thus discourage and intercept animal rustlers
  • Buyers can determine ownership of cattle at point of purchase
  • Herders can send distress calls via the MTN AIMS app on their phone in the event of an emergency
  • This provides the first step towards Nigeria’s participation in the international beef export market for which livestock identification is a pre-requisite
  • The origin of animals can be traced which is essential for disease surveillance and control
